Moving day is disruptive for everyone — and our pets feel it keenly. Animals are creatures of routine and territory, so a house move can leave them anxious or, worse, at risk of bolting. With a little planning, you can keep your dogs, cats and other companions calm, safe and quickly settled in the new home.
Before the move
- Visit the vet. Update vaccinations, check microchip details are current, and ask about calming options for very anxious animals — essential for a long-distance move.
- Keep routines steady. Feed, walk and play at the usual times even as the house fills with boxes.
- Introduce carriers early. Leave the travel crate out with a favourite blanket so it feels safe, not scary.
- Update tags and chip registration with your new address and phone number.
On moving day
The safest place for a pet on moving day is away from the action. Movers are carrying heavy items through open doors — exactly when a frightened animal can escape. Options:
- Settle them in one closed, quiet room with food, water and bedding, and put a clear note on the door.
- Better still, arrange a day with a friend, family member or kennel/cattery so the chaos passes without them.
- Keep a pet “essentials” bag with you: food, bowls, leash, litter, medication and a familiar toy.
The journey
Pets should always travel with the family, never in the moving truck. For long trips, plan regular stops for water and a leashed stretch, never leave an animal in a hot car, and keep cats secured in a ventilated carrier. For interprovincial moves, some families prefer professional pet-transport specialists — ask your relocation manager, who can coordinate this alongside the household move.
Settling into the new home
- Set up one “safe room” first with their bed, bowls and toys, and let them adjust before exploring the rest.
- Keep cats indoors for at least a week or two so they bond with the new territory before going outside.
- Walk dogs on a leash around the new neighbourhood until they know their way home.
- Check fences, gates and pool covers before giving free run of the garden.
- Re-establish routine fast — familiar mealtimes and walks rebuild a sense of security.
Less chaos means calmer pets
The calmer and quicker the move itself, the less stress your animals absorb. A well-run, professionally packed relocation with a single dedicated manager keeps moving day organised and short — which is as good for your pets as it is for you.
